The Fieldfare Kielder Challenge is an inclusive national outdoor competition, running for over 20 years. The Challenge is based on outdoor problem solving games, designed to test the skills of a team to communicate, plan, solve and evaluate their performance. The games aim to challenge skills in teams of 8 young people aged 13-16 (4 with and 4 without disabilities). All team members can play an active role in solving the challenges and the inclusion of all should be a key goal of the team. There are opportunities for the team to pit themselves against the Challenge games within the school or group environment, out in the countryside and, ultimately in regional competition heats and even a national final.
This is the second year Redditch School Sport Partnership have entered this competition. This year we entered 2 teams, both made up of 4 pupils from Pitcheroak Special School and 4 pupils from Arrow Vale High School.
The teams had to take part in 5 challenges throughout the day and were scored according to their problem solving and team working skills. Both teams did fantastically well on the challenges and really enjoyed the day, despite the rain!
The Redditch teams finished in 1st and 4th place which is a great achievement. We now just have to wait and see if the team who finished in first place will qualify to go through to the final as it will depend on the scores of the winners in other heats taking place in the same region.
Whatever the final outcome, both teams should be very proud of themselves as their motivation and enthusiasm shone through and enabled them to complete the competition so well.
