Cheerleading Festival at Arrow Vale High School
18 May 2009

Over 130 girls aged between 12 and 19 years of age took part in a cheerleading and sports dance competition on the 6th May. The event was organised by the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Competition Manager Team, English Gymnastics and Redditch and North Worcestershire School Sport Partnerships. The competition followed on from the weeks of cheerleading coaching that have been funded and delivered in schools by the Worcester Warriors very own cheerleaders, the Kukri Allstars.

The event was held as part of the Sports Unlimited programme ,which is focused on engaging more young people in sport and physical activity. To date all 8 School Sport Partnerships within the 2 counties have received delivery, with this being the 3rd festival to take place.

9 schools took part in the competition held at Arrow Vale High School, Redditch, which for over half of the young people involved was their first experience of competition and representing their school.

During the previous week 21 leaders from schools across Redditch and Bromsgrove underwent some training on how to organise and run events. The course was delivered by English Gymnastics and meant that the leaders were on hand during the event to put their new skills into practice by managing the teams in addition to extra jobs such as organising the music and photography.

To add to the occasion two awards were presented; the best performance award which went to St Johns Middle School and the CHEERleading award which went to Walkwood Middle School and the Fusion team for their vocal support.

The festival was a huge success and the girls had a great time. There were some really impressive routines and the encouragement they gave each other throughout the whole festival was fantastic. All of the participants did their schools very proud!
