Herefordshire and Worcestershire Sports Awards 2009

The Herefordshire and Worcestershire Sports Partnership Awards 2009 took place at Worcester Warriors Rugby club during March.
Each of the districts from across the 2 counties nominated the winning sports people from their own awards ceremonies. The Sports Partnership then narrowed it down to 3 nominee's in each category.

The representatives put forward from Redditch were:

Dan Ruckwood from Redditch Swimming Club for Junior Male Sports Personality of the Year

Sally Turner from Redditch Trampoline Club for Coach of the Year

Georgette Mullen and Glenn Scott both of Redditch and Bromsgrove Athletics Club, nominated for Disabled Sports Personality of the Year.

Astwood Bank Cricket Club Under 15’s Girls for Junior Club Team of the Year

Will James from Kingsley College and Action Sport nominated for Young Volunteer of the Year

Chris Britt from Redditch Swimming Club nominated for Sports England’s Community Sports Award.

At the beginning of the evening, guests were treated to some speeches from two inspirational sports people. Firstly was Sascha Kindred OBE. Sascha is one of Britains most successful paralympians representing Great Britain at four games. His achievements to date include six Paralympic, five World, and eight European championship gold medals in the pool. He is currently British, European, Paralympic and World record holder and was appointed an officer of the order of the British Empire for his services to disability sport.
The second speaker was Rachel Walker. Rachel represented Great Britain in Hockey at the Bejing games. She has previously picked up a silver medal at the Commonwealth games and bronze medals at the European cup.

It was a fantastic evening for Redditch with successes in three award categories. Georgette was announced Disabled Sports Personality of the Year,



Astwood Bank Under 15’s Girls Cricket Team were named Junior Club Team of the Year.



Will James received the Young Volunteer of the Year Award.
