Playground to Podium Identification Day
26 Feb 2009

Last term Redditch School Sport Partnership held an Identification Day for the Playground to Podium scheme.

Playground to Podium is a national strategy for the identification, development and support of talented young disabled athletes

Participants from schools across the district were invited to the event which took place at the Abbey Stadium and was organised by the SSCO from Pitcheroak Special School.

Over 80 pupils attended on the day representing their school. The schools were Pitcheroak Special School, Kingsley College, Arrow Vale Community High School, St Augustines High School, Woodrush High School, Birchensale Middle School and Ipsley Middle School

The pupils took part in a wide range of activities looking at their basic skills including balance agility and co-ordination. They also took part in activities which showed more specific skills such as throwing and catching and target throwing.

The pupils were assessed on each station and those who were selected in a number of areas were identified to progress to the next stage of the programme.

The identification day was very successful with lots of pupils being identified for the next stage.

The next stage of the programme will be County Assessment Centres where others identified in the same way from across the county will all attend a centralised event for a more formal assessment and high quality coaching in specific sports.
